A meeting between Katy Cares, Inc. and Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL), a non-profit service of the Houston Bar Association, was facilitated by Dr. Jennifer Mizulski (left), an attorney at the Quan Law Group. Barbara “Bobbie” Cochran (right), Staff Attorney, represented HVL and Dr. Dawid J. Pieterse represented Katy Cares. The objective of the meeting was to facilitate legal support services for the single led families, single mothers and children, who are enrolled in the Katy Cares Trauma Informed Therapeutic Program.
Houston Volunteer Lawyers is the pro bono legal aid arm of the Houston Bar Association, who is bridging the gap between needs and solutions in Harris County. Founded in 1981, they help thousands of people each year with their most pressing legal needs, such as child custody, landlord/tenant, guardianship, and probate. HVL are there because (unlike the criminal justice system) general citizens, in this case, residents of Harris County, have no right to an attorney if they cannot afford one to save their home or keep custody of their children. HVL fill this gap in the civil justice system by connecting eligible clients, with private attorneys who volunteer their time. Each year, they receive over 30,000 calls for help, and volunteer attorneys collectively donate over $5 million in free legal services.
HVL provides free legal aid to low-income individuals by connecting them with lawyers in the private bar who volunteer their time. HVL helps with: Family law, Guardianship, Estate Planning, Probate, Tax Disputes with the IRS, Landlord/Tenant Disputes, Homeownership, Consumer/Bankruptcy. Mothers enrolled in the Katy Cares Program are mostly low-income individuals or do no not have access to the needed financial resources because of several and obvious reasons.
The conversation between HVL and Katy Cares is ongoing and we are excited that these mothers, in the future, will have access to legal aid and support. Watch this space for more updates.
