It’s not just one problem that keeps single-parent families stuck. Often there is a confluence of issues that together prevent a single Mom or Dad from overcoming the financial burden of caring for a family today in our suburban community. Typically, in addition to lacking financial and material resources, they also struggle with spiritual and emotional issues, and also perhaps the psychological resolve to manage their current situation.
It is estimated that there are more than 5,000 single mothers and another 8,000 women in a dysfunctional relationship or marriage, in the Greater Katy, Fulshear, and Richmond area alone!
Short-term food and housing resources solve part of the problem. The whole problem requires a comprehensive programmatic response.
This is where Katy Cares steps in.
The Katy Cares, Inc. objective is to provide a range of Programs that meet all of the needs of the whole family.
Our objective is to ensure that every parent who graduates from our Program will have the necessary skills to position themself educationally, connect spiritually, and excel emotionally with adequate relational skills and sufficient resources to sustain themselves and their children.
A familiar old aphorism says, “Give a person a fish and feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish and feed them for lifetime.”
At Katy Cares, we seek to teach parents to succeed for a lifetime.
Katy Cares offers a range of programs for the whole family.
Ready, Set, Go!
Ready, Set, Go! is a parenting program for single-parent families that face financial, emotional, and social hardships as a result of unexpected, traumatic and life-changing events. This is an eight-module program offering each parent winning ways to build and sustain healthy relationships, effective habits, and practical skills to manage a demanding family life. Participants meet weekly for two to three hours and have access to a facilitator and an individual therapist to support their growth and achieve parenting goals.
Grow Through Life for Teens 11 to 15
Grow Through Life is a skills-based personal development program for teens with a comprehensive prevention approach. This Program helps teens acquire and build skills that strengthen protective factors, promotes intra- and interpersonal competencies, instills pro-active communication skills, mediate appropriate situation-related behavior, and develop moral decision making and reasoning, with a deepened awareness of current family dynamics. Grow Through Life is theme-based and addresses the most critical developmental assets necessary to make a smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Safari Adventures provides group-based social skills learning experiences for primary school children. This program focuses on aspects of developing emotional resilience and provide activities that can:
- Raise the child’s awareness and understanding of various interpersonal skills
- Develop a basic understanding of how to communicate with others
- Contribute to a deepened understanding of self-worth
- Support them to initiate assertiveness during difficult social interactions
- Offer a basic understanding of information-processing
- Identify pro-social emotions and how to use them
Katy Cares is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2016 as a solution-driven response to our community’s most vulnerable population – single-parent families who are victims of trauma due to a life-altering event such as domestic violence, abuse, intimidation, separation, divorce, financial challenges due to a loss of employment, income, child support, and/or a natural disaster.
